Family Friendly Hotel in the Lakes
The Kings Arms Hotel in Hawkshead is open to the whole family, inviting kids as well as parents to enjoy everything that the lake district has to offer. From the restaurant to the hotel suites, we want families to have the chance to use our great hotel as the base for their exploration of one of the most beautiful parts of Great Britain. If you want to bring your four-legged friend along then that’s fine too, as we also welcome well-behaved dogs through our doors.
To make your family comfortable, we can provide appropriate accommodation for your kids, and ensure that they’re well catered for with a delicious children’s menu complementing our main pub grub. However, important though these factors may be, it’s also true that there are other factors that go into making a family holiday extra memorable – such as the activities that you find for the family.
Well, with the Lake District you’re in luck, as the whole area is absolutely full of activities and attractions that are great for families. You can take a look at our ‘things to do’ page for a more general sense of what’s on in the area, however here we’d like to spotlight some of the activities that make Hawkshead such a family friendly holiday location.
Explore the Legend of Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter may have been born in London, but it was the Lake District that really became her home – and she went on to buy farms around the area, and to marry a local solicitor from Hawkshead itself. This means that the beautiful Lake District countryside now comes alive with celebrations of her life and work, with key attractions including The World of Beatrix Potter and her house on Hill Top, just a little distance from our village.
If you haven’t already introduced your kids to the beautiful Beatrix Potter stories, then this will be the perfect chance: the magic of her tales is even more profound when read in the natural settings that inspired them. And, since they’re still as well-loved today as they ever were, it will be a great way to lull your kids to sleep of an evening.
A Day Out in Keswick
It’s a little further afield (around 45 minutes away, by car), but a day out in Keswick is highly recommended, as this market town is absolutely full of activities that will appeal to the whole family. One of the most unusual is the town’s Puzzling Place – an interactive exhibition of conundrums, illusions and mental tricks. There are also museums to explore, a climbing wall to help expend some of that youthful energy, and several stunning parks and gardens to enjoy.
Or, if you want to drive the extra distance to Bassenthwaite, you can find the Lake District Wildlife Park, a so called ‘hidden gem’ which certainly deserves a wider audience. From meercats to zebras, and even micropigs, introduce your little ones to the friendly creatures. You can also have a personal animal encounter, meeting the meercats or the lemurs up close and personal.
Of course, while it’s great to know that there are some structured family activities available – especially if you’re staying for more than one or two days – the natural beauty of the Lake District is also a family attraction! With exciting walks, forests to explore and hills to conquer, we think that people of all ages will get a rush from exploring the areas just around Hawkshead.
